Disappointed after losing to Portugal in the European Championship final clash, France's football team head coach Didier Deschamps said his boys weren't cool-headed and missed lot of opportunities which where there to score.

Portugal, even without their leader Cristiano Ronaldo, upset hosts France 1-0 in extra-time as substitute striker Eder scored the only goal of a breathtaking final at the Stade de France to clinch their first major football title.

Euro football championship winner Renato Sanches of Portugal was chosen above French winger Kingsley Coman and team-mate Raphael Guerreiro for the SOCAR Young Player of the Tournament award.

The accolade caps a sensational breakthrough season for the 18-year-old, whose performances as a substitute in three of Fernando Santos' side's first four matches in France earned him his maiden international start for the quarter-final against Poland.

On a high after winning the European Championship beating hosts France 1-0, Portugal skipper Cristiano Ronaldo described the historic moment as one of the best in his glittering football career.

Substitute Eder scored the only goal in extra time as Portugal edged past a fighting France to win the Euro 2016 here on Sunday. It was also Portugal's maiden triumph in a major championship.

A younger, fitter and stronger Portugal side sans an injured Cristiano Ronaldo saw off wave after wave off French pressure before scoring the only goal of the game through the unlikeliest of sources, French based Portuguese striker Eder, who rifled in a shot from 30 yards past the outstretched hand of Hugo Lloris in the France goal to give Portugal a 1-0 win in the Euro 2016 Final.

France, who played their semi-final a day after Portugal, named an unchanged starting eleven for this game, a decision that would prove costly in the long run as their players simply ran out of gas in the latter stages of the contest. Portugal meanwhile welcomed back Real Madrid star Pepe and young midfield sensation William Carvalho from injury and suspension, with both men having an absolutely sensational game.

France football's new poster boy Antoine Griezmann deserves to be compared to legendary compatriot Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini, according to another French great Thierry Henry.

Following his brace in the semi-final victory over Germany at the European Championship, France's new poster boy Antoine Griezmann admitted that he and his team-mates feel a responsibility to bring joy back to the nation after the terror attacks in Paris last November.

Griezmann, the Atletico Madrid forward whose career has been spent solely in Spain since leaving his family home in Macon to play for Real Sociedad as a teenager, will lead France into the Euro 2016 final against Portugal on Sunday having scored six goals so far in the competition for Didier Deschamps' team.

Hosts France head coach Didier Deschamps on Saturday stressed the need to limit Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo's influence in Sunday's Euro football championship final.

"If there is an anti-Ronaldo plan, like a recipe, no one has yet found," Xinhua quoted Deschamps as saying at the pre-final press conference at the Stade de France. "Ronaldo is a great player with outstanding athleticism, footwork and aerial play. We must be careful and limit his influence," Deschamps added.
