Ireland’s Paul O’Donovan, Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist, added a World Championship gold to his CV today at the 2016 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

O’Donovan raced to gold in the lightweight men’s single sculls and become the only rower to go from medalling in Rio to medalling in Rotterdam. This is the first World Champion title for O’Donovan who finished ahead of Hungary’s Peter Galambos and Lukas Babac of Slovakia after setting a high stroke rate pace in the head wind conditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that a Task Force will be set up to prepare a comprehensive action plan for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic Games -- 2020, 2024 and 2028.

He made the announcement at a meeting of the Council of Ministers in New Delhi.

"The Task Force will prepare overall strategy for sports facility, training, selection procedure and other related matters," an official statement said.

The Prime Minister said that the Task Force, comprising in-house experts as well as others from outside, will be set up over the next few days.

 

American swimmer Ryan Lochte has been charged by Brazilian police for making a false statement claiming that he was robbed during the recent Rio Olympics.

Brazil's Olympic pole vault champion Thiago Braz da Silva has received a one kilogram gold bar from his former club as a reward for his triumph at the just concluded Rio Games.

The 22-year-old won Brazil's first ever Olympic pole vault gold medal beating France's defending champion Renaud Lavillenie with an Olympic record leap of 6.03 metres.

Russian athletes banned from the Rio Games will be provided financial assistance, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said at a meeting with members the country's Olympics team.

"The foundation will transfer funds to the Russian Olympic Committee to provide financial assistance to our leading athletes, members of our national track and field team banned from the Games by the IOC," Medvedev said on Thursday, reports Tass.
