Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Xabi Alonso on Thursday announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season. The 35-year-old confirmed the news, which had been rumoured for the last two months, on social media.

"It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I believe it's the right time," Alonso, a former Liverpool player, was quoted as saying.

German football giants Bayern Munich humiliated Arsenal 5-1 to complete a 10-2 triumph in their Champions League knockout stage tie at the Emirates Stadium in London.

While few expected the Gunners to prevail after being routed 1-5 in the first leg in Munich, the disgust of the fans at the Emirates after the final whistle on Tuesday was palpable. This marks the seventh consecutive year, Arsenal has been knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16.

Robert Lewandowski led the way with a hattrick as FC Bayern Munich hammered Hamburger SV 8-0 in a rather one-sided clash in the Bundesliga football championship. In another match in the German top division on Saturday evening, Leipzig reaped their second consecutive win after beating Cologne 3-1.

Table toppers Bayern showed no mercy with Hamburg as the German giants whitewashed the visitors, scoring thrice in the first half half and five times after halftime.

Bayern Munich thrashed London giants Arsenal 5-1 after a dominant second half performance saw them score four goals in the fist leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday.

Arsenal were able to hold their own in the first half but Bayern turned on the style after the restart to extend their Champions League winning record to 16 consecutive victories on home soil.

Douglas Costa's goal helped Bayern Munich edge Wolfsburg 1-0 while Borussia Monchengladbach cruised past second-division football side Greuther Fuerth 2-0 in the last 16 of the German Cup.

The Bavarians took the reins from the kickoff and created the first chance of the game with nine minutes played as Arjen Robben tested Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels with a volley on Tuesday.

Germany's World Cup winner Philipp Lahm has confirmed that he will hang up his boots at the end of the current football season and rejected the role as Bayern Munich's sports director.

"I have decided to stop playing football at the end of the season," the 33-year-old defender said after Bayern's 1-0 win over Wolfsburg in the third round of the German Cup on Tuesday.
