Dean Elgar fell agonizingly one run short of a maiden Test double century and Hashim Amla scored his 27th three-figure score at this level as the Proteas tightened their grip on the first Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh at Senwes Park on Friday.

Elgar (199 off 388 balls, 15 fours and 3 sixes) and Amla (137 off 200 balls, 17 fours and a six) shared a second wicket stand of 215 that followed the 196 that Elgar and Aiden Markram had posted for the first wicket. Their endeavours enabled Faf du Plessis to declare during the tea interval on day two at 496/3 and then capture three Bangladesh wickets including the key one of their captain, Mushfiqur Rahim before the close.

Aiden Markram has focused on the positives rather than the disappointment of missing out on a Test century on debut, after a dominant opening day of the first Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom on Thursday. The 22-year-old came three runs short of becoming the seventh South African to score a hundred on debut, but was involved in a mix-up which led to his run-out on 97 and the end to a fairy tale start to international cricket.

“ I’m more than happy to take it,” he said of his innings at stumps, with South Africa on 298/1. “ Had you asked me if I would take 97 last night I would have taken it with open arms, I’m more than happy with the 97.

Aiden Markram will make his debut for the Proteas in the first Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh to be played at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, from September 28 to October 2. The 22-year-old Multiply Titans opening batsman was a member of the Test squad during the England tour without playing a match and has also captained the South Africa A four-day squad.

The other uncapped player in the squad is all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo. Phehlukwayo was also part of the tour group to England.

Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc and left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe were the two notable omissions from the 13-member Australia side that will tour Bangladesh for a two-Test cricket rubber in August, Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Friday.

Starc, who was ruled out of the second half of the India tour with a fractured foot, returned for Australia's failed ICC Champions Trophy campaign. But the left-armer's injury has not fully healed and he was subsequently ordered rest to be fit for the crucial Ashes campaign, starting November 23.

India skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday said part-time off-spinner Kedar Jadhav's spell was the key behind India being able to restrict Bangladesh to 264/7 and then cantering to a nine-wicket win in the ICC Champions Trophy semifinal to set up a final clash against Pakistan.

"We had another complete game. When we won the toss, I expected another clean performance. With the ball, we never let them away. The two quick wickets got us the momentum. He (Jadhav) has bowled in India as well. He is a smart guy. He knows where to pitch it. Had those guys carried on, we would have been chasing 300.
