The Toyota Cheetahs and Isuzu Southern Kings went down for the second week in a row on their Guinness PRO14 tours with the South African teams suffering defeats against the Scarlets in Wales and Leinster in Ireland respectively.

The Scarlets delivered an effective display against the Toyota Cheetahs in Llanelli on Sunday for a 43-21 victory, while Conference B log-leaders and competition pace-setters, Leinster, outplayed the Isuzu Southern Kings 59-19 in Dublin on Friday.

Cricket South Africa has recalled Multiply Titans fast bowler Lungi Ngidi to the Standard Bank Proteas squad for the first three Momentum One-Day Internationals against Sri Lanka and has also named fellow fast bowler, Anrich Nortje of the Warriors, as a new cap. All-rounder Wiaan Mulder of the bizhub Highveld Lions, who was added to the squad for the final ODI against Pakistan, has been retained.

“It is great to have Lungi back in the squad after a lengthy period on the sidelines caused by the injury he suffered in the white ball series in Australia last year,” commented CSA National Selection Panel (NSP) convener Linda Zondi. “His recent form for the Titans in the Momentum One-Day Cup has been most impressive and he is clearly match fit for international cricket again.

Kusal Fernando and Oshada Fernando shared the first century partnership of the entire Test Series to enable Sri Lanka to inflict a chastening 8-wicket victory on South Africa at St. George’s Park on Saturday.

In all their third-wicket partnership was worth 163 as Sri Lanka coasted to victory in the morning session on the third day as slightly less than 30 overs were required to score the remaining 137 runs needed for victory with 73 runs being scored in the first hour and the remaining 64 in a slightly extended second hour.

Suranga Lakmal and part-time spinner Dhananjaya de Silva shared seven wickets to cause a major Standard Bank Proteas second innings collapse and give Sri Lanka a wonderful chance on Friday of winning the Test Series at St. George’s Park.

Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier had earlier also shared seven wickets to give the Proteas a lead of 68 runs on the first innings but, as they have done throughout the series, Sri Lanka continued to match the home side punch for punch to dismiss the Proteas for 128 runs and set a victory target of 197.

Manav Suthar and Hrithik Shokeen took three wickets each to help India under-19s clinch the opening Youth Test match against South Africa U19s by nine wickets, despite a valiant half-century from Bonga Makaka in Trivandrum on Friday. The victory gives the home side a one-nil lead in the two-match series.

Suthar and Shokeen claimed figures of 3/44 and 3/52 respectively, to restrict the tourists to 167 all out after 66 overs in the second innings, having resumed on 34/3 on the penultimate day.

South Africa produced an uncanny replica of their first innings batting effort in the first Castle Lager Test match against Sri Lanka at Kingsmead when the second Test match got under way at St. George’s Park on Thursday.

The end result was that they got dismissed for 222 runs compared with the 235 they made in Durban. This is, however, a contest between two struggling top-orders and they were still well in the game at the close of play with Sri Lanka on 60/3 still trailing by 162 on the first innings.

The experienced trio of Willie le Roux, Faf de Klerk and Franco Mostert are back in the Springbok starting team for Saturday’s Test against France at the Stade de France in Paris.

The match in the French capital is South Africa’s second fixture of the 2018 Castle Lager Outgoing Tour to the United Kingdom and France and kicks off at 22h05 (SA time).
