Nadal in Super Form

Rafael Nadal comes into this tournament as the world's best player, yet he has never been in the final of the Australian Open. He would be looking to correct that anomaly and stamp his authority early on in the season. In his first round match he faced Christophe Rochus from Belgium, a 13-year veteran on the circuit. At the Rod Laver arena today, Nadal showed why he's regarded as one of the greatest players ever.

He swept through the opening set breaking Rochus in three consecutive games without dropping a game himself. The set was a f

The year's first grand slam, the Australian Open, got off to a great start today with many of the top seeds in early action. The first day saw some very interesting ties, especially on the women's side.

Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Dokic had their first matches but all eyes from India were riveted on Sania Mirza's singles performance in this grand slam and she didn't disappoint.

In the first round she faced off against the world number 61 Marta Domachowhska from Poland who she had met unsuccessfully in 2003. There were some concerns about Sania's preparation coming in, fol

Somdev crashes out, Sania gets tough draw

sania_mirza_australian_open.jpgIndian hope Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the second qualifying round at the Australian Open at the hands of Poland's Lukasz Kubot in a tight three set encounter that could have easily gone the other way.

Somdev started the brighter of the two and wrapped up a rather lacklustre first set, 6-4 doing particularly well on the return of serve. Kubot picked up his game in the second and served a lot better conceding no break points and took his sole opportunity to break Devvarman's serve.

The decider was a marathon encounter which saw 5 breaks of serve and 22 chances created by either player in a set that lasted over an hour and half,

Tennis fans can expect to see the world's best players at this year's Australian Open, with all but one of the top 32 ranked men, and 30 of the top 32 ranked women seeded.

Russia's Nikolay Davydenko has withdrawn due to a recurring heel injury; Maria Sharapova's ongoing shoulder complaint will prevent her from defending her Australian Open 2008 title, and China's Na Li has a knee injury.

Men's defending champion Novak Djokovic is seeded 3rd and last years losing finalist Jo-W
