Milkha Singh

After the war for Indian independence took his parents life, Milkha Singh returned to India and in 1953 joined the Indian Army. On joining the army, Milkha Singh paid special attention to athletics and started to train himself for 400 meter race.

Determined to be the best and realizing his talent as a sprinter, the jawan took to training five hours every day. Motivated by his coach Havildar Gurdev Singh, he left it to the elements to hone his craft -- running on the hills, the sands of the Yamuna river, and against the speed of a metre gauge train.

"The flying Sikh", represented India at Rome, during the 1960 Summer Olympics. However games that year proved to leave a terrible mark of dissatisfaction in Milkha's career as he lost the Bronze medal by a mere 0.1 seconds.

Charanjit Singh

From a tender age, India's dexterous hockey player showed a great inclination towards the Indian National game. In 1949, he played for Punjab University and a year later was made the captain of the university team. After joining the Punjab Police force in 1950, Charanjit participated in all major hockey tournaments held in the country.

Even though Charanjit participated in the 1960 Olympics held in Rome, the experience turned out to be quite disastrous for him as well as the national team. A fractured fibula kept him out of the final - a match India lost to arch-rivals Pakistan.

However in the 1964 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, the Indian National Hockey team got what was due to them. Charanjit captained the team and the team ended a four year wait to overturn Pakistan in the final.
