Olympic feel-good factor must be springboard for public health, says UK expert

Sport in the UK is in danger of 'falling off the edge of a cliff' after the Olympics if the industry isn't managed correctly during the economic crisis, according to a former Government advisor on sport. Martyn Allison, former national advisor for culture and sport for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, also argued that the greatest opportunities will be around using sport to improve health and wellbeing, and that sport participation could help address youth alienation and social unrest.

He made the comments at the sixth annual Sheffield Hallam University Physical Education, Sport Development and Coaching student conference, the first major UK sport conference of the Olympic year.

WSH World XI to take on WSH India XI in a battle of champions in Chandigarh

The epochal and path-breaking World Series Hockey is putting on a special exhibition match on December 20 at the Sector-42 Stadium in Chandigarh. This showcase is aimed at giving fans a taste of the action that they can expect to see when WSH begins on 29th February, 2012.The two teams playing this match will be WSH World XI and WSH India XI. The match will start at 6 pm and the stadium gates will be opened at 4 pm.

The WSH World XI will comprise of all the star players from abroad who have signed on for the tournament and will be coached by Andrew Meredith and Jose Brasa. Leading the pack will be Olympic Gold Medalist Brent Livermore along with Zeeshan Ashraf, Jiwa Mohan, Chris Seddon and many more as they scorch the field for the WSH World XI team with their stunning pace and technique.

Paul Breitner picks Mumbai's Best U-16 Footballers

The FC Bayern Youth Cup kicked off its second leg in India giving young footballing talent from Mumbai the stage to showcase their skills. One of the biggest youth scouting programs in the world today, which will took place at the Western Railway Sports Association, on December 10th and 11th had legendary midfielder Paul Breitner cheering the kids on- All this for an opportunity to play this global tournament at the Allianz Arena just days after the Champions League Final and be trained by the best in the business.

The scouting program in India is an initiative taken by adidas, Audi and FC Bayern München to promote the game of football and give young talent the opportunity to experience the game at an international level. The first leg, which took place in the capital, New Delhi saw over 800 young footballers take part, out of which 15 were chosen for a chance to represent India at the cup.

Mountainous challenge ahead in The Herald VW Cycle Tour

A growing demand for professionally organised mountain biking events in the Eastern Cape has seen two entrepreneurs start a dedicated business and take over the reigns of the off-road portion of The Herald VW Cycle Tour. Earlier this year former competitive cross-country riders Brad Jackson and Julie Briggs, both from Port Elizabeth, started Mountain Events after witnessing a steady growth in the sport over the past five years.

As committee members of the Fat Tracks Mountain Bike Club, they noticed a lack of good quality events for riders in the province.

"Fat Tracks realised that organising mountain biking events was too big a job for a club and its volunteers to handle, so they approached us to do it and take the events to the next level," said Jackson.

Rahul Dravid to deliver Sir Donald Bradman Oration in Canberra tonight

India's Rahul Dravid, Test cricket's second highest run scorer, will deliver the Sir Donald Bradman Oration at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra tonight. Dravid is the first Indian invited to deliver the Oration at the event which honours the career, contribution and memory of the world's greatest-ever cricketer, Sir Donald Bradman.

The Oration will be live streamed on the Cricket Australia website at http://www.cricket.com.au/sir-don-livestream. Dravid is scheduled to speak from 8.30pm. A transcript of his speech is available here.

During his Oration tonight, Dravid will speak on a wide range of issues, including:

  • The strong link between India and Australia during the first World War
  • What Don Bradman meant to India in the 1930s
  • Cricket's place in India and India's place in world cricket
  • The challenges for cricket, including scheduling and balancing the three formats of the game

Tonight's event will also include a tribute to a group of Australian servicemen who helped restore public morale, and cricket's place in the community, in the weeks following the final shots of World War II in Europe.
