Springboks name squad for Castle Tri-Nations Series tour

Captain John Smit will lead a squad of 27 players drawn from the Springboks’ preliminary Rugby World Cup squad on the away leg of the Castle Tri-Nations Series, it was announced on Friday. Smit, the most capped international captain in Test rugby, will win his 103rd cap against Australia in Sydney on July 23. A week later the Springboks play New Zealand in Wellington.

The squad features youth and experience, as well as recognising Vodacom Super Rugby form. There are five Rugby World Cup winners in the squad as well as six uncapped players in flyhalf Elton Jantjies, scrumhalf Charl McLeod, loose forward Ashley Johnson and props Coenie Oosthuizen, Werner Kruger and Dean Greyling. All but Greyling have appeared in non-cap matches for the Springboks.

All Blacks squad named for 2011 Investec Tri Nations

All Blacks Coach Graham Henry and his Assistant Coaches Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith have today announced the squad for the 2011 Investec Tri Nations and the All Blacks Test against Fiji For Canterbury, with the selection of new All Black Jarrad Hoeata and the return of several All Blacks the key features of the 30–strong squad.

There is a sole new All Black in the squad, Highlanders and Taranaki lock Jarrad Hoeata, who started every match for the Highlanders this year in his outstanding second Investec Super Rugby season. The 27–year–old, who was born in Tauranga, made his provincial debut in 2006, played for the New Zealand Sevens team the same year and also featured strongly for New Zealand Maori in last year's Sealord Centenary Series.

Australian Diamonds book World Netball Championship final against New Zealand

The Australian Diamonds booked a dream final against the New Zealand Silver Ferns at the 2011 World Netball Championships with a comprehensive 82-46 semi-final victory over Jamaica at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday night. The Diamonds silenced their doubters after the quarter-final against Malawi with a complete team performance, recording their highest ever score against Jamaica and securing the Diamonds 300thvictory in international netball, with what Diamonds vice-captain Catherine Cox labelled ‘beautiful’ netball.

“That was the other thing that we took from yesterday’s game and a few of the rounds, that we weren’t pleased with was that we threw to many balls away in transition,” Cox said. “I don’t think the defenders threw a single ball away tonight, coming out of defence was so effortless, they made all the right choices, their vision was exceptional and you can’t ask for more than that. Everyone played the beautiful game tonight.”

Australian Diamonds down Malawi Queens to advance to 2011 World Netball Championships Semi-Finals

The Australian Diamonds have booked a spot in the 2011 World Netball Championships Semi-Finals with a hard fought 58-44 victory over Malawi Queens at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday night. The Diamonds guaranteeing a top four finish at the championships after holding off a strong and physical challenge from the Queens in a cautious performance.

"It was very physical and they play a completely different game on court to anyone I know," Australian Diamonds mid-courter Kim Green said. "They play backwards all the way and are very difficult to defend."

England legend Claire Taylor retires from international cricket

w_eng_wc2England cricketer Claire Taylor today announced her retirement from international cricket. A stalwart of women’s cricket, Taylor represented England in 15 Tests, 126 ODIs and 27 T20s in her 14 years with the England team. During her international career Taylor hit 4101 ODI runs, lifted two World Cups, won the Ashes and was the first woman to be named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year.

2009 was a phenomenal year for Taylor and for the England women’s team which saw Taylor receive an MBE for her achievements in cricket. The 35-year-old Berkshire batswoman also holds the record for the highest one day international score at Lord’s by a man or women, she hit 156 not out against India in 2006.
