Jean Bredenkamp smashed a blazing 152 runs to set up a comprehensive, 103-run victory for North West University Pukke over Yorkshire Cricket Club on the opening day of the Momentum National Club Championships in Pretoria on Sunday.

Opening batsman, Bredenkamp’s knock came off just 149 runs including 13 boundaries and a six, helping post a daunting 342/4 after they were asked to bat first by Kimberley based, Yorkshire. Janneman Malan (1) was the only top order batsman not to make runs as Louren Steenkamp  and Wihan Lubbe added 89 and 59 runs respectively.

It was a tough day at the office for Yorkshire with Kagisho Mohale (1/46), Samuel Laven (1/48), Themba Maupa (1/54) and Orapeleng Motlhoaring (1/94) taking just one wicket each.

In reply, Mbulelo Bosman top scored with 54 off 40 deliveries as the Northern Cape side attempted to chip away at the target. Grant Mokoena (48 off 50) fell just short of a half-century, while openers Kagisho Pedi (36 off 50), Zakir Kathrada (34 off 43) and number four batsman, Aloysius Seleka (31 off 52) rounded off the remainder of the most notable contributions of the innings.

Pukke’s Ruan Haasbroek was the chief destroyer, taking 4/58 with Bjorn Fortuin chipping in with 2/37 as Yorkshire were bundled out for 239.

At Tuks Oval, home side Assupol Tuks claimed a seven-wicket win over Wellington CC. Migael Pretorius (3/31), Donovan Ferreira (2/26) and Ruan de Swardt (2/30) took seven wickets between them, bowling out the opposition for 162 in 45.5 overs.

Tuks’ top order then made quick work of the chase after getting over the initial hurdle of losing opener, Jiveshen Pillay without scoring. Rubin Hermann top scored with 67 from 41 balls (6 fours, 3 sixes), while scores of 40 and 35 from Niel Brand and Tony de Zorzi respectively helped them cruise to victory in 25.4 overs.

Finally, at Irene Villagers Oval, Fort Hare University suffered a heavy, eight-wicket defeat at the hands of the Hollywood Bets Crusaders CC.

Yamkela Olifant (82) and Jongile Kilani (42) hit half-centuries, helping Fort Hare to 226 in 48.4 overs after being put in to bat first.

Nicholas Hewer (3/28), and Tyrone Koen (3/41) shared six wickets, while Jason Biddulph chipped in with 2/42 to help restrict the opposition to their manageable score.

Once again, it was a tale of the top order winning the match for chasing side. John Riekert (89 off 101 balls) and Riaan Minnie (63 off 66) shared a 137-run opening stand, laying the foundation for a big win for their team before the demise of the latter. South Africa under-19s batsman, Andile Mogakane picked up the mantle, returning an unbeaten 44 from 53 deliveries (5 fours, 1 six) to help his side to victory.
