Jason Niemand took three wickets for 52 runs and hit an unbeaten 60 off 53 balls to help the Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s secure a three-wicket win over England in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Youth One-Day International Triangular Series final at Senwes Park on Sunday.

The visitors were restricted to 259 with five balls to spare thanks to Man of the Match, Niemand, whose wickets came off 10 overs. Hermann Rolfes (2/33) and Jade de Klerk (2/47) also claimed two wickets each after captain, Raynard van Tonder won his fifth toss in a row and put the them in to bat first.

South Africa’s reply got off to a good start, thanks to openers, Matthew Breetzke and Jiveshen Pillay (26), who shared a 65-run stand before the latter was bowled by Will Jacks in the 11th over. Breetzke followed seven balls later, caught and bowled by Harry Brook (2/49) for a 35-ball 39 (six fours, one six).

Rolfes and Van Tonder shared a 50 partnership for the third wicket before the skipper departed for 34 in the 25th. Wandile Makwetu chipped in with 27 runs from 39 deliveries before Niemand took charge with the bat. He and Kenan Smith (15 off 25) kept the scoreboard ticking and South Africa’s hopes alive as Niemand delivered the side to victory with two balls remaining.
