England captain Heather Knight and Georgia Elwiss summoned up all their reserves of defiance to bat through 62 overs on the final day at the North Sydney Oval, securing a draw and keeping their team in the Ashes.

The day began with Australia needing 10 wickets to claim four points but they could only manage two with Knight and Elwiss putting on 117 for the third wicket. Knight ended the day unbeaten on 79 and Elwiss 41 when the skippers shook hands with an hour to go at 8.30pm.

Over 12,000 fans have come into the North Sydney Oval over the last four days – hopefully many will return for the first of three T20s on Friday night. England will need to win that and the rest of the T20 series to reclaim the Ashes, but after a day of defiance they still have hope.
