Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger hit out at match officials yesterday after the Gunners' latest defeat at the hands of Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

Arsenal, who have a terrible away record against Stoke, dominated the game, but were denied by the brilliance of young Jack Butland in the Stoke goal, who made a clutch of key saves, especially in the first half.

Wenger though reserved his ire for the match officials after Arsenal had a goal ruled out for offside, and were not awarded what Wenger felt was a certain penalty for a foul on Hector Bellerin.

Speaking after the match, Wenger said, "We know we don't get penalties. Look at the numbers and you will see. We had last year the highest number of penalties against us at home by a mile and the lowest number for us. So I give you just the numbers. I don't say anything else."

Wenger was also predictably annoyed with the referee's assistant for ruling Alexandre Lacazette's goal offside. The veteran French boss said, "I believe we scored a regular goal that was not offside. It is an easy decision. Even his foot was not offside."

Wenger's annoyance was only enhanced by a poor goal conceded by Arsenal as some sloppy play in midfield by Granit Xhaka and Mesut Ozil allowed former Real Madrid youth product Jese to score the game's only goal.

Hitting out at his own side for their lack of focus early in the second half, Wenger said, "We know not to make defensive mistakes and we came out after half-time too sluggish. We were punished."

Arsenal now have a week off before they head to Anfield to take on Liverpool next Sunday.
