Temba Bavuma scored his 1000th Test match run as he and Morne Morkel guided the Standard Bank Proteas past the follow on target on a rain-disrupted third day of the third Test match at The Oval in London on Saturday.

Bavuma (50 off 120 balls, 8 fours) was last man out, having shared key partnerships of 53 with Kagiso Rabada and 47 with Morkel. Vernon Philander batted at No. 11, having been released from hospital, as the Proteas innings ended on 175, giving England a massive lead of 178 on the first innings.

Philander got through six expensive overs by his standards when England batted again before leaving the field and it was Morkel who produced an inspired spell to concede only 20 runs from 9 overs, including taking the wicket of Alastair Cook for the second time in the match.

Keaton Jennings, who was dropped early on, and Tom Westley then compiled an unbroken stand of 44 before play came to an end midway through the afternoon session.

In spite of the lost time England are very well placed with an overall lead of 252, 9 wickets still in hand and two full days of the Test match still to go.
