Manchester City have continued rebuilding their defence by splashing a whopping £52 million on 23 year old French left back Benjamin Mendy.

Mendy played an integral role in AS Monaco's run to the title last season and once again the French Champions' success appears to have had a detrimental effect on their ability to hold on to their best players with top clubs in Europe swooping down upon them.

City, signed a new right back in English defender Kyle Walker from Tottenham Hotspur last week, shelling out a reported £45m on the attacking full back. They now appear to have complemented his signing by taking care of the left side of their defence with the capture of the young Frenchman.

City have once again enjoyed a rather lavish summer of spending with Pep Guardiola having dished out £175 million already this summer with Mendy becoming his fourth major signing following the additions of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva (£43m) and Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson Moraes (£35m) earlier in the transfer window.

Guardiola hinted in an interview earlier this week that he is far from done rebuilding his squad and is hoping to bring in another 2-3 marquee players before the close of the summer transfer window.

Perhaps crucially, all of Guardiola's signings this summer are young players with a long term future at Manchester City, and isn't really spending for the sake of it, but to plug holes that were rather obvious in his side last season.
