Swiss legend and top seed Roger Federer defeated Russian Karen Khachanov on Saturday thus advancing to the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

Federer, who is a step away from his ninth title at the tournament, took an hour and 25 minutes to win 6-4, 7-6 (5) against the 6 foot 6 inch Russian. Federer had to dig deep to come away from the contest in straight sets, saving two set points on his own serve at 5-6 late in the second set. In the final, the Swiss will play German Alexander Zverev, a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner against Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Zverev has some history on his side against the living legend, having beaten the Swiss in the semi-finals right here in Halle last year, in what was the second meeting between the two.

Federer has shared after his semi-final today, “I thought it was extremely close, especially that second set... I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the 'breaker'.”

Interestingly, Federer beat another German Nicolas Keifer in the final to win his first title at Halle in 2003.

Looking ahead to his final against Zverev, Federer said, “He's got home-court advantage. He's got a wonderful serve and one of the best backhands in the game... He takes big cuts at the ball, returns very well. He's a tough player to play against.”
