Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov on Thursday reached the Halle Open quarter-finals after the withdrawal of Japan's Kei Nishikori due to injury. After receiving medical treatment on the court to treat a back injury, the World No.9 Japanese player opted to pull out after 34 minutes, with the score at 3-2.

The 21-year-old Russian now advances to the quarter-finals to play compatriot Andrey Rublev, a wild card recipient, who stunned veteran qualifier Mikhail Youzhny 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, Swiss legend Roger Federer also booked his place in the quarter-finals at Halle with a hard earner 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over 29 year old German Mischa Zverev.

Up next for top seed is German Florian Mayer, who stunned the no.6 seed Lucas Pouille of France, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Federer has beaten Mayer in each of their seven previous meetings, including thrice in Halle.

Speaking after his win, Federer said, "He started serving great, which put me under pressure as I wasn’t getting many looks. It was important to stay calm after missing chances to win the set at 5-4. And it’s important to win ‘breakers. They are the sets you need to win to win tournaments. It felt like a close ‘breaker that could have gone either way.

“After I got that in the bag I was really able to start to relax and really play and feel the way I want to feel out there. That’s the first time I’ve felt like that since Miami, so that’s a good sign looking ahead.”
