Romanian third seed Simona Halep and Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina defeated Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro and Croatia's Petra Martic respectively, to reach the women's singles quarter-finals of the French Open on Monday.

Halep crushed Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-1, in one hour. This is the first time Suarez has lost on clay against Halep, who is keeping her momentum after winning in Madrid and reaching the final in Rome. Halep produced 19 winners in the match while her Spanish opponent didn't do herself any favours by producing 25 unforced errors.

Halep, 25, will play in the French Open quarter-finals for the second time having reached the final in 2014, wherein she lost to Russia's Maria Sharapova.

The Romanian on Tuesday will fight for a place in the semi-final against world No.6 Svitolina, who defeated Martic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Speaking after her win, Halep said, "I think I played the best match here in Roland Garros against Carla, which always was a tough match. On clay I never won against her, so it was a really good match. I think I played exactly what I had to... I'm ready to go into this second week. I'm happy to be in the quarterfinals again, so let's see. Next opponent, it's a big challenge for me. I will give my best."
