Thiem, Goffin advance to the third round of the French Open

Austria's Dominic Thiem, sixth seed, and Belgium's David Goffin on Wednesday advanced to the third round at the French Open.

The Austrian beat Italian Simone Bolelli 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 in two hours and 23 minutes, while Goffin struggled in a 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Thiem will next play the American Steve Johnson, seeded 25th. Johnson got the better of Croatian Borna Coric.

Goffin meanwhile will face Argentine Horacio Zeballos in the third round. Zeballos stunned big serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3.

In the women's draw Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko defeated Puerto Rican Monica Puig to go through to the third round. Ostapenko defeated Puig 6-3, 6-2 in a match which lasted around an hour.

The Latvian is set to play against Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko, who scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over Russian Ekaterina Makarova.
