Argentine Juan Martin del Potro did not lose his nerve on his return to the French Open, four years after his last appearance in the Paris Grand Slam, and won in his opening round match against compatriot Guido Pella on Tuesday.

Del Potro, seeded 29th, needed only one hour and 49 minutes to win the match, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

The Argentine has demonstrated the progress of his game from the beginning of the season, reaching the quarter-finals in Rome, where he was beaten by world no.2 Novak Djokovic.

Del Potro, who reached the semi-finals of the Roland Garros in 2009, the same year he scored his only Grand Slam victory in New York, is playing on the clay courts of Paris for the seventh time, after he was away for four years due to wrist problems.

Speaking to the press after his win, Del Potro said, "I love to be playing this tournament again after five years. I never could find the place where I have to go, because in five years, five years ago it was a really different tournament. I think that the tournament is getting better every day... I am so happy to be here after five years."

His next opponent will be Spaniard Nicolas Almagro a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 winner against Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis.

Should Del Potro get the better of Almagro, he could well face top seed Andy Murray in the third round.
