Shai Hope missed out on a maiden Test hundred, but gave West Indies a fighting chance in the second Test of the Brighto Paints presents the Q Mobile Cup Series against Pakistan in Barbados.

The 23-year-old hometown boy anchored the Windies’ resistance before falling for a career-best 90, as the home team reached 264 for nine in their second innings – a lead of 183 – at the close on the fourth day of the contest at Kensington Oval.

Hope shared three consecutive half-century stands with Kraigg Brathwaite, Roston Chase and Vishal Singh that formed the backbone of the West Indies’ defiance before his dismissal triggered a slide that saw five wickets fall for 29 in the space of 79 balls in the final hour.

Brathwaite scored 43, Singh made 32 and Chase added 23 before leg-spinner Yasir Shah triggered the late slide to finish the day with 6-90 from 39 overs.

WEST INDIES 312 (Roston Chase 131, Jason Holder 58, Kieran Powell 38, Shane Dowrich 29; Mohammad Abbas 4-56, Mohammad Amir 3-65, Yasir Shah 2-83) and 264 for nine (Shai Hope 90, Kraigg Brathwaite 43, Vishal Singh 32, Roston Chase 23, Shimron Hetmyer 22; Yasir Shah 39-12-90-6, Muhammad Abbas 2-57)
