Half-centuries from Jason Mohammed and wicketkeeper Shai Hope were topped by Shoaib Malik’s ninth One-day International hundred to lead Pakistan to a six-wicket victory over West Indies in the third and decisive ODI of the Brighto Paints presents the Q Mobile Cup Series on Tuesday.
Hope hit the top score of a resolute 71 from 112 balls and Mohammed supported with 59 from 64 balls, as the Windies post 233 for nine from their allocation of 50 overs, after they chose to bat on a docile Guyana National Stadium pitch under cloudy skies.
The pair added 101 for the fourth wicket in the only show of stability from the batting which was undermined by steady, if not spectacular bowling from the Pakistanis.
The wicket of opener Kamran Akmal for a first-ball duck, the fall five overs later of Ahmed Shehzad for three and the dismissal of second ODI century-maker Babar Azam cheaply raised the hopes of the home team, as the visitors slumped to 36 for three in the ninth over.
But the Windies bowlers failed to make further inroads into the opposition batting, as Malik hit an unbeaten 101 from 111 balls and Muhammad Hafeez collected 81 from 86 balls, sharing 113 for the fourth wicket to put Pakistan firmly on track for victory with 41 balls remaining.
WEST INDIES 233 for nine off 50 overs (Shai Hope 71, Jason Mohammed 59, Kieran Powell 23; Mohammed Amir 2-41, Shadab Khan 2-57, Junaid Khan 2-60)
PAKISTAN 236 for four off 43.1 overs (Shoaib Malik 101 not out, Mohammad Hafeez 81, Sarfraz Ahmed 24 not out; Shannon Gabriel 2-60)
