Centuries to all-rounders Jack Edwards and Jonathan Merlo have put Australia Under 19s in a dominant position after day one of their three-day match against Sri Lanka Under 19s in Hobart.
New South Wales product Edwards, 16, and Victorian product Merlo, 18, combined for a 182-run stand in the series opener, after the Australians had been 4-112.
Edwards was dismissed for 106 off 186 deliveries, as the hosts pushed for quick runs late in the day, while Merlo was unbeaten on 100 on 133 deliveries when the Australians declared at 6-309 in the 80th over.
The hosts were 4-160 at tea, with Edwards and Merlo scoring at a rapid rate in the final session.
Fast bowler Ryan Hadley then produced a late breakthrough for Australia, as Sri Lanka finished the day at 1-38 off eight overs.
Earlier in the day, NSW Blues and Sydney Thunder rookie Jason Sangha contributed 41, while Nipun Ransika was the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowlers with 3-46 off 12.3 overs.
