Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas has won his third straight Brazil Open tennis title by defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 6-7 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4 in a rain-affected final.

The match was postponed on Sunday night when heavy rain forced players off the court with Ramos-Vinolas leading the dual defending champion 7-6 (3), 3-3. Play finally resumed on Monday night after almost 24 hours of constant rain at the outdoor clay court venue.

Cuevas took control immediately after the restart before wrapping up the match. It was Cuevas' sixth ATP singles title, all of which have been on clay.

Cuevas said after his win, “It was very different from previous years. I wasn't playing really well in the start... I had to turn a few matches around, in the quarter-finals too, and the match stopped yesterday when I was one set down. But I was strong enough to turn it around and win a third title here."

“I was making a lot of double faults. When I prepared to hit that second serve, there was a big chance that I would hit a double fault. So I thought about the possibility of the underarm serve and that it was something I probably shouldn't do. But I also should not do another double fault (laughs). So I just stopped thinking and I did it.”

A disappointed Ramos-Vinolas meanwhile said, “I tried to keep calm during all the time we waited. I just couldn't keep the same level as yesterday. I had a lot of chances, 15/40, break points, but it just wasn't my day.”
