Commanding performances from Jordan Thompson and Nick Kyrgios have given Australia a 2-0 lead over Czech Republic in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, in Melbourne.

Debutant Thompson got the host nation off to a flying start by beating world No.54 Jiri Vesely 6-3 6-3 6-4. World No.15 Kyrgios then defeated Czech debutant Jan Satral in the second singles rubber, winning 6-2 6-3 6-2 to put Australia in charge of the tie.

On Saturday, Sam Groth and John Peers are scheduled to meet Zdenek Kolar and Radek Stepanek in the doubles rubber, although there is a question over Stepanek’s fitness after Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil revealed the veteran is struggling with a back injury.

The reverse singles will be played on Sunday, with the winner of the tie facing either the United States or Switzerland in the quarterfinals in early April.
