Cancer Council Australia partners with HSBC Sydney 7s

There will be plenty of reminders for fans at the HSBC Sydney 7s to slip, slop, slap, seek (shade) and slide (on sunglasses) this February with Cancer Council Australia signing on as the official charity partner of the 2017 tournament, which will be played from Friday 3 February to Sunday 5 February at Allianz Stadium, Sydney.

Announced at the HSBC Sydney 7s Fan Day on Bondi Beach today, the partnership will see the Cancer Council selling programs and offering sunscreen at pop-up booths at the Sydney 7s, where fans will be asked to donate a gold coin to support Cancer Council’s work to help those affected by the disease.

With Saturday 4 February being World Cancer day, fans at the HSBC Sydney 7s will also be encouraged to use the #WeCanICan hashtag to increase awareness about the global impact of cancer and spread the word about how Australians can reduce their risk, including by participating in sport and physical activity.

Australian Rugby Union Chief Operating Officer, Rob Clarke said: “We are very proud to be partnering with such an important charity for the HSBC Sydney 7s.

“With a huge crowd attending the tournament across the three days, it will be important for our fans to be SunSmart and we are delighted to have Cancer Council on deck as our partner to help spread their positive health messages."

Professor Sanchia Aranda, Cancer Council Australia CEO and President of the Union for International Cancer Control said, “Cancer Council Australia is very excited to be the charity partner of the HSBC Sydney 7s in 2017.

“The tournament not only brings together men and women from a variety of different nations, but sends a strong message of active healthy lifestyles to spectators and fans. As World Cancer Day falls on a Saturday this year there is a focus on communities around the world showing their support through sport – this partnership is a perfect example of that.

“As well as fundraising at the tournament, Cancer Council will be using it as an opportunity to educate spectators about the seven simple steps they can take to cut their cancer risk. This includes quitting smoking, being SunSmart, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy, balanced diet, reducing alcohol intake and getting checked.”

Cancer Council Australia will also have a pop-up area in the Kids Zone where kids will be able to meet Cancer Council mascot Dougal Bear.
