Russian tennis player Anastasiya Pavlyuchenkova advanced to the Australian Open quarter-finals beating compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 6-3 in Melbourne on Sunday.

Pavlyuchenkova, the 24th seed, got the better of eighth seeded Kuznetsova in an hour and eight minutes in their fourth round match.

25-year-old Pavlyuchenkova entered the Australian Open quarters for the first time in her career. She claimed 62 of the total 112 points played in the match, hitting 21 winners - seven more than her opponent.

She will next play American veteran and former world No.1 Venus Williams, who defeated Germany's Mona Barthel 6-3, 7-5 earlier in the day.

36 year old Venus has never won the Australian Open, making the final just once previously, way back in 2003 when she was beaten by younger sister Serena.

Looking forward to going deep in the tournament this year, Venus said, "I've been blessed enough to do something that I love."

Also making her way through to the last eight was Spanish seventh seed Garbine Muguruza, who beat Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-3.

Muguruza will take on the winner of the match between top seed Angelique Kerber and American Coco Vandeweghe later today.
