Second-seed Serena Williams of the United States overcame her compatriot Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open on Saturday.

Serena hit 17 winners against the world No.92 to advance to the second week of the tournament, which she has won six times.

She will face 16th seed Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic, who defeated France's Caroline Garcia in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 28 minutes.

Serena said after her win, "I don't have anything to prove in this tournament here. Obviously I'm here for one reason. But at the end of the day, this is all a bonus for me and I look forward to playing Strycova. I'm ready for her."

Strycova meanwhile was excited at the prospect of taking on Serena, saying, "She's human, and she is beatable. This is a Grand Slam, and we are talking that she already won, but I don't like these talks."

Others to advance to the last 16 included British hope Johanna Konta, who thrashed former world no.1 Caroline Wozniaki 6-3, 6-1. She will face Russian 30th seed Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round. Makarova stunned sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3.

Also through to the pre-quarter-finals was Croatian veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. The 34 year old battled back from a set down to beat Greece's Maria Sakkari, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

She will square off against American qualifier Jennifer Brady, who continued her impressive run by beating 14th seed Elena Vesnina 7-6 (4), 6-2.
