Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirmed yesterday that the Gunners will exercise the options that already exist in the contract of Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker to extend their stay at the Emirates.

Both players are out of contract this summer, but Wenger shared today that Arsenal had already built in clauses into their original contracts which gave the club an option to extend their present deals by another year, an option he intends to take with both aging veterans.

Mertesacker hasn't played for Arsenal yet this season, and unfortunately his return has been further delayed by a calf injury which will mean he will not feature at all in January.

Cazorla meanwhile remains sidelined after his surgery last year and is unlikely to return to the pitch before March.

Despite both veterans struggling with fitness issues, Wenger is keen to keep them as part of his squad next season, and revealed in an interview, "We have an option on both of them and I think we will take it."

Wenger added what he felt the duo brought to the side, "|Their qualities as football players firstly but as well for their mental guidance. We need to have a balance between youth and experience. They are important in that."

Putting an end to concerns over Santi Cazorla's future is indeed a positive step for the Gunners, one which Wenger obviously always knew he was going to take, but was not something the fans were aware off.

Meanwhile Arsenal continue to wait anxiously on news that Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil agree new deals with the club.
