Despite being Arsenal's go to guy this season, Manager Arsene Wenger believes it is time to give star forward Alexis Sanchez a bit of a breather.

Announcing his decision to rest Sanchez for Arsenal's trip to Deepdale to take on Preston North End in the FA Cup, Wenger said, "I always planned in my head, no matter what happens, that in January he will need a breather. What we forget is that when they go away for international games they travel to Chile. Then they play sometimes 2,000 miles away, they travel back and then they come here and play the next day again."

“They are human beings - you have to give them a breather at some stage. Mentally and physically [Alexis needs a rest] because at the moment he is a bit jaded. You can see that he is tired,” he added.

Wenger also shared that there is little point asking the player what he wants as someone like Sanchez always wants to play, but it is important to give him sufficient downtime to ensure that he comes back fresher and hungrier.

Sanchez will hope to enjoy his downtime watching Arsenal advance in the FA Cup before probably returning next weekend for the Gunners' trip to Wales to take on Swansea City.
