Andy Murray defeated Stanislas Wawrinka in straight set 6-4, 6-2 to top Group John McEnroe and seal his semifinal spot. The Scot dominated winning 87% of his first serve points, controlling the rallies and forcing the errors from his opponent. Wawrinka after a solid start fell apart in a blaze of 27 unforced errors as he lost 9 of the last 12 games from 3-3 in the first set. The straight set loss also meant that the Swiss no.1 failed to qualify for the semifinal for the first time at the season finale. The last round robin between Nishikori and Cilic is now mainly for the 200 ranking points on offer.

The semifinal lineup is also now finalised and keeps the meaty proposition of the battle for the year end no.1 going down to the wire a very real possibility. Current World No.1 Andy Murray will play Milos Raonic in the first semifinal tomorrow afternoon while Novak Djokovic will take on Kei Nishikori in the evening encounter.

Earlier, in the doubles, Henri Kontinen & John Peers topped Group Fleming/McEnroe completing an unbeaten run on their tournament debuts. The duo upset Herbert & Mahut 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-4 to send the top seeds crashing out winless. The loss was only made worse by the fact that the Frenchmen also lost the doubles team top ranking to Murray & Soares in the process. In the individual doubles ranking Mahut could still finish the season as World No.1 unless Murray & Soares take the title in which case Soares goes on top.

Final Scores:

A.Murray d S.Wawrinka 6-4, 6-2

H.Kontinen/J.Peers d P.H.Herbert/N.Mahut 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-4
