World no.1 Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the Shanghai Masters with a routine 6-3, 6-3 win against Italy's Fabio Fognini on Tuesday. Not as fortunate though was veteran Spaniard David Ferrer, stunned in three sets by compatriot Feliciano Lopez.

Djokovic resorted to his powerful all-round game to eliminate his Italian opponent in the second round, who had previously beaten Spaniard Albert Ramos in the first round.

Djokovic, the defending champion at the tournament, will now take on the winner of the match between the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov and Canada's Vasek Pospisil. Dimitrov has been in excellent form in recent weeks, reaching the final of the China Open in Beijing last week.

Spanish veteran David Ferrer meanwhile was beaten by compatriot Feliciano Lopez in a thrilling contest in Shanghai earlier today. The intense clash ended with a victory for Lopez by 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (4) after two and a half hours.

Ferrer, world no. 15, was expected to do well in Shanghai after making it to the semifinals in Beijing, before he was defeated by eventual winner Andy Murray.

Lopez, a world no. 28, will follow this tough clash with a match against American Jack Sock, who squeezed past Argentine Guido Pella, 7-6, 7-5.
