In one of the best matches of the tournament so far, sixth-seed and crowd favourite Venus Williams lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the fourth round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York on Monday.

"I was prepared that I'm going to play Venus. It's going to be tough, because all the people are cheering for her," Xinhua news agency quoted Pliskova as saying.

Pliskova, 24, reached last eight in a major for first time in her career. She had never been past the third round in 17 appearances at majors before.

Williams, 36, failed to convert a match point that she held at 5-4 in the third set when Pliskova was serving at 30-40. But Pliskova erased that with a swinging forehand volley and followed it up with another forehand winner.

"I really played the perfect point there, and she managed to stay alive," Williams said about the match point she missed after the game.

Pliskova then had three match points of her own a couple of games later when she raced to a 40-0 lead when she served for the match at 6-5 in the deciding set, but Williams rattled off 5 points of her own to force the match into a final set tiebreak.

Williams though, who had produced her best tennis in the moments preceding the tiebreak, produced a poor error-strewn showing in the breaker as Pliskova raced into a 6-2 lead before eventually wrapping up the contest on her fifth match-point.
