Top seed Serena Williams outplayed unseeded Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-3, 6-3 in a potentially tricky first round encounter at the US Open in Flushing Meadows, New York on Tuesday.

Williams needed to be right on the money from the start given the quality of opposition she was up against, and she powered down 12 aces to demolish Makarova in 63 minutes.

"I got off to a fast start, and I didn't want to start out slow. That's all I could do today," said Williams, who has played just three singles matches since Wimbledon because of a sore right shoulder.

"I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow to see. I haven't been able to play much since Wimbledon, so every day I'll just see how it goes," she added.

Joining Serena in Round 2 on Tuesday were fifth-seed Simona Halep and 11th seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Halep rolled over Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 6-0, 6-2 to claim her spot in the second round while Suarez Navarro, playing in her ninth US Open, routed Teliana Pereira of Brazil 6-0, 6-0 to advance.
