The final four have been decided in the women's singles tennis event at the Rio Olympics with world no.2 Angelique Kerber completing the prized quartet with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 demolition of Britain's Johanna Konta's in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Her opponent at the last four stage will be young American Madison Keys, who also cruised into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1 win over 19-year-old Russian Daria Kasatkina.

Keys has been in excellent form in the run up to the Olympics, reaching the final of the Rogers Cup barely a week back. She will though take a 1-4 career record into her semi-final match with Kerber.

Puerto Rico's Monica Puig also advanced to the final four with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Germany's Laura Siegemund, as did Czech superstar Petra Kvitova, who dismantled Ukraine's Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-0.

Svitolina looked a shadow of the player who upset world No. 1 Serena Williams on Tuesday, and was easily crushed by the two-time former Wimbledon champion, who is now one of the favourite for the title.

In the women's doubles event the Swiss duo of Martina Hingis and Timea Bacsinszky beat the No.3 seeds Chan Yung-Jan and Chan Hao-Ching, 6-3, 6-0 to reach the semifinals. Up next for the Swiss Misses are the No.6 seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic. Hlavackova and Hradecka saved three match points en route to squeezing past Russians Daria Kasatkina and Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

The other semi-final will see the other Czech team Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova take on another Russian pairing in Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
