Australian top scorer and arguably the country's greatest ever footballer, Tim Cahill, has returned to Australia to play in the A-League for Melbourne City, the club announced on Thursday.

Cahill, 36, left Chinese Super League (CSL) side Hangzhou Greentown last month. He has never played professional football in Australia, but was a youth player on the rolls of Sydney Olympic and then Sydney United before he moved to England to join Millwall on a free transfer way back in 1998.

"I am incredibly excited to have signed with Melbourne City and ultimately the City Football Group. There is real ambition and purpose here, qualities that are immensely important to me," Cahill said in a statement.

Cahill moved to China and signed with Shanghai Shenhua last year and left the club in February, 2016 for Hangzhou Greentown where he played for six months.

Cahill is best known for his time in England with Everton FC for whom he played from 2004-2012, notching up 278 appearances.

The veteran midfielder has been capped 91 times by the Australian national team, for whom he has scored an incredible 47 goals, despite not being a striker!
