Sunderland's new manager David Moyes has made his first signing of the summer splashing out a rather extravagant £8 million to sign Senegalese international Papy Djilobodji from Chelsea.

Djilobodji, a tall, powerful and versatile centre-back made a surprise £2.7 million deadline day move from Nantes to Chelsea last year, a decision which supposedly didn't go down at all well with then Manager Jose Mourinho.

Djilobodji failed to impress Mourinho's replacement Guus Hiddink and was subsequently shipped out on loan to Werder Bremen for the second half of the season, for whom he made 16 appearances, even scoring a couple of goals.

Sunderland have signed the 6 foot 4 inch defender on a 4-year contract.

He moves to the Stadium of Light after having made a solitary injury time substitute appearance for the Blues and will relish the prospect of showing English fans what he can really contribute.

Sunderland open their Premier League campaign away to former Premier League champions Manchester City next Saturday.
