Australia are 66-2 at stumps on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Kandy, trailing Sri Lanka’s first innings total by 51 runs.

Sri Lankan Captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and elected to bat with the Australia making light work of the hosts, bowling them out for 117 runs in 35 overs. Josh Hazlewood (3-21) and Nathan Lyon (3-12) picked up three wickets each. Lyon's three wickets came after the lunch break as he ran through the lower middle order of the hosts.

Australia lost the early wickets of David Warner (0) and Joe Burns (3), as they slid to 7-2 themselves, but Usman Khawaja (25*) and Steve Smith (28*) rescued the innings, sharing a 59 run stand for the third wicket when rain stopped play after tea.
