Two goals within the space of 5 second half minutes from Atletico Madrid hitman Antoine Griezmann earned hosts France a place in the Quarter-finals of Euro 2016 after a bright start from the Republic of Ireland had given France a real scare.

Ireland striker Shane Long made the most of some contact from former Manchester United trainee Paul Pogba to earn his side a penalt, one which Robbie Brady smashed past Hugo Lloris via the inside of the post.

Lloris produced an excellent save to deny Daryl Murphy, while France themselves spurned half chances to restore parity in the first half.

France laid siege on the Irish goal in the second half and that pressure finally paid off when Griezmann rose unmarked in the Irish box to head home in the 57th minute from Bacary Sagna's right wing cross.

And it didn't take France long to sneak ahead with Griezmann latching on to Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud's neat flick before beating Darren Randolph in the Irish goal.

Ireland were reduced to 10 men five minutes later with Shane Duffy's last man challenge on the goal bound Griezmann denying him a chance at a hat-trick.

France completely dominated the last 25-30 minutes, spurning multiple opportunities to make the game safe with substitute Pierre-Andre Gignac missing two easy chances, while Blaise Matuidi and Griezmann also let opportunities pass them by.

France though are through to the Quarter-finals where they will face either England or Iceland. They will crucially be without Adil Rami and N'Golo Kante for that game with both men picking up another yellow card today to earn themselves a suspension.

Final Score: France 2-1 Ireland (Brady 2' pen, Griezmann 57', 61')
