The Kolkata Knight Riders reclaimed second place in the Indian Premier League standings, squeezing out an entertaining 5 wicket win against the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium with 5 balls to spare.

The Knight Riders won the toss and invited the Royal Challengers to have a bat. The hosts did well, posting an impressive 185-7 on the board, but for the umpteenth time this season, their bowlers were powerless to defend it. RCB recalled Chris Gayle to their side, but the powerful West Indian failed to fire, contributing just 7 to his side's cause. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli made matching half-centuries, each contributing 52 with the wicketkeeper batsman taking 12 balls fewer than his skipper, racing to the milestone off just 32 ball.

KKR came back well with the ball, breaking the partnership by dismissing, getting rid of AB de Villiers cheaply for 4, and then taking the wicket of Kohli before he could hit another level, slowing down the RCB charge at 129-4 in the 17th over.

However, RCB picked up the pace in the last 3 overs and a bit with Shane Watson smashing 34 off 21 balls, while Sachin Baby and Stuart Binny chipped in with a pair of 16s, the latter taking just 4 balls to push RCB to a competitive score.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore were right in the contest when they reduced the Kolkata Knight Riders to 69-4 at the start of the 11th over, and with their top 4 in the hutch, one could have been excused for believing that KKR were on course for another defeat.

That was not to be the case as Yusuf Pathan produced one of those once a season innings that only he is capable off, smashing an unbeaten 60 off 29 balls to almost singlehandedly win the game for KKR.

Pathan did get some more than decent support from Andre Russell with the powerful West Indian contributing 39 off 24 balls, with the duo sharing a 95 run stand for the fifth wicket which sealed the direction of the contest.

Suryakumar Yadav, back down the order to his more customary role, added a handy 10 off 5 balls to steer KKR to victory.

The win takes the Kolkata Knight Riders to 10 points from 8 games, while RCB stay in some strife with just 4 points to show for their tournament efforts thus far. They face the Rising Pune Supergiants next, right here in Bangalore on Saturday. The Knight Riders meanwhile have the Kings XI Punjab in their immediate future, enjoying home comforts on Wednesday.
