It took the Kolkata Knight Riders just about 4 hours to regain top spot in the Indian Premier League standings from the Gujarat Lions, but they did it the hard way with Umesh Yadav spanking Thisara Perera for 6 with 3 balls to spare to earn KKR a narrow 2 wicket win in an entertaining contest against the Rising Pune Supergiants, who suffered their fourth straight defeat of the season.

Having been put in to bat by KKR, Pune made a competitive 160-5 from their 20 overs with Ajinkya Rahane top scoring with 67 from 52 balls. Pune recovered from the early loss of Faf du Plessis, bowled by Bangladeshi tweaker Shakib Al Hasan for 4, as Rahane and Steve Smith (31) shared 56 run stand for the 2nd wicket.

Unfortunately for Pune those runs came a bit too slowly, and while Thisara Perera (12) and Albie Morkel (16) smashed three sixes between them, it was the final burst courtesy skipper MS Dhoni (23 from 12 balls) that took them to a decent score.

Kolkata's run chases thus far have been built around the excellence of their opening pair, but both Robin Uthappa (0) and Gautam Gambhir (11) failed today, the former out for a first ball duck to Albie Morkel, while the latter was run out trying to pinch a non existent second run.

Suryakumar Yadav, promoted to no.3, was the mainstay of the KKR batting, top scoring with 60 off 49 balls. He shared a 51 run stand with Yusuf Pathan (36) for the fourth wicket after Shakib (3) too fell without making a major contribution.

Both Pathan and Yadav fell in consecutive overs as KKR's chase stuttered. Andre Russell (17 off 11 balls) and R Sathish (10 off 8 balls) kept chipping away at the total, but after Piyush Chawla failed in the final over in his attempt to be the hero, Umesh Yadav smoked one over long on to win the game for KKR and take them right back to the top of the IPL standings with 8 points from 5 games.

The Pune Supergiants meanwhile aren't Rising at all, they stay second from bottom having lost 4 games in a row after opening the tournament with a win. Skipper MS Dhoni was far from pleased with the length bowled by his spinners in today's latest loss and will hope his side can do better when they take on the in-form Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday.

KKR meanwhile have a few extra days off before they head to Mumbai to square off against the Mumbai Indians on Thursday.
