The Kings XI Punjab finally got their season up and running with more than a little help from their opponents the Rising Pune Supergiants, who surprisingly won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that has proved largely fatal right through the tournament thus far.

Pune made three changes to their side for this game with Thisara Perera, Irfan Pathan and Ankit Sharma replacing the trio of Mitchell Marsh, RP Singh and Rajat Bhatia. Pune look super solid on paper with a lot of batting up the order and plenty of options on the bowling front though. Meanwhile, the Kings XI Punjab, still chasing their first win, made just the one change, Kyle Abbott coming in for the terribly out of form Mitchell Johnson.

Faf du Plessis anchored the Pune innings, top scoring with 67 from 53 balls, but typically his runs didn't come at a particularly frightening pace and the men who batted around him also made heavy-weather of their task on a rather hot day in Mohali. Ajinkya Rahane (9), Kevin Pietersen (15) and Thisara Perera (8) managed 32 from 36 balls between them, meaning Pune were never really looking like they would post a challenging total.

Steve Smith's 38 from 26 balls gave the innings some late momentum, but Punjab bowled two fantastic overs at the death with Mohit Sharma taking wickets off consecutive balls to open the 20th over to restrict Pune to a far from imposing total of 152-7.

The Kings XI appeared to be cruising towards their first win as both their openers made half-centuries, with Manan Vohra's 51 from 33 balls the more attractive knock as he shared a 97-run partnership with Murali Vijay (53) for the opening wicket.

The game should have been in the bag for Kings XI, but three wickets from leg spinner Murugam Ashwin after the dismissal of Vohra to Ankit Sharma saw KXIP slide to 119-4 midway through the 17th over.

With the game seemingly slipping away from them again, Glenn Maxwell finally came to the party for Punjab, smashing 32 from just 14 balls to wrap up the win as Kings XI ultimately cruised to victory with 8 balls to spare.

The result means that both teams have a win and two losses from their 3 games so far, though Pune do find themselves 4 places above Punjab in the points table courtesy of a far better net run rate.

Up next for the Pune Supergiants is a home game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday, while Kings XI Punjab have just a day off before they welcome the Kolkata Knight Riders to Mohali on Tuesday.
