World no.1 Novak Djokovic crashed out of the Monte Carlo Masters today in his very first match of the tournament, going down to 22 year old Czech star Jiri Vesely in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Djokovic, the defending champion here in Monte Carlo, never really found the level of consistency that one usually takes for granted from the Serb, going down to the world no.55, who was a semi-finalist in Morocco last week.

Djokovic had threatened to bounce back after dropping the first set, rattling off 4 games in a row to take the second set 6-2. However, Vesely recovered his poise at the start of the deciding set, closing out the match in a little over 2 hours. Up next for Vesely is the no.13 seed Gael Monfils.

His second round exit today was his first at such an early stage of a tournament in 3 years, and his first defeat to a player outside the top 50 in the world in over 5 years. Djokovic's loss was also just his second this year.

The top seed's exit spells good news for the likes of Andy Murray and Roger Federer who won their second round matches yesterday. Also, benefiting from Djokovic's exit are the fourth and fifth seeds, Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal, both of whom registered solid but far from spectacular wins today.

Wawrinka battled past Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6, 7-5, while Nadal beat British No.2 Aljaž Bedene, 6-3, 6-3.

Djokovic wasn't the only seed to bite the durst today with 6th seed Tomas Berdych also struggling to find his feet on clay, going down to a qualifier, while Richard Gasquet, seeded ninth also crashed out to a French wildcard recipient.
