The Delhi Daredevils may have completely changed their side for season 9 of the Indian Premier League, but the team for the capital has started the new campaign much like its last, getting thrashed by 9 wickets by former champions the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

An early burst from West Indies allrounder Andre Russell rocked the Delhi Daredevils as the fast bowler removed Delhi's top 3 to leave the visitors in trouble at 31-3 in the 5th over. Things didn't really get any better for Delhi when Kolkata swapped around their pacers for spinners with veteran chinaman bowler Brad Hogg running through their middle order, taking 3-19, while John Hastings (2-6) and Piyush Chawla (2-21) picked up two wickets apiece as Delhi were bowled out for just 98 runs, failing to bat their 20 overs.

Four Delhi batsmen did get into double figures, with Quinton de Kock top scoring with 17 from 10 balls, but the early threat from the visitors quickly dissolved after they were put in to bat.

Any hopes Delhi had of a comeback disappeared rather quickly with Robin Uthappa (35) and Gautam Gambir (37*) sharing an opening stand worth 69.

Amit Mishra, the only frontline spinner in Delhi's starting eleven today, provided them with a much needed breakthrough, getting rid of Uthappa, caught in the deep.

It made little difference to the outcome of the game as Gambhir, in the company of Manish Pandey, saw Kolkata over the line in a little over 14 overs. The win takes Kolkata to second place in the IPL standings, behind the Rising Pune Supergiants on net run rate.

Up next for Kolkata is the visit of the Mumbai Indians, who will still be smarting from their loss to Pune and come calling to Eden Gardens on Wednesday, 13th April. Delhi are in action two days later when they host the Kings XI Punjab at Feroz Shah Kotla.
