Zinedine Zidane's first match in charge of Real Madrid saw Los Blancos record a convincing 5-0 win against Deportivo de La Coruña with Gareth Bale lighting up the affair with a well taken hat-trick.

Bale scored twice with his head, either side of a side foot finish with his left foot as Real Madrid registered a comfortable win against a very ordinary Deportivo side that didn't seem all that interested in the art of defending.

Karim Benzema had put Real ahead in the 15th minute with a cute flicked finish after Sergio Ramos' had miscued an effort from a corner. Bale was in an offside position as the shot came in and was clearly in the line of sight of the Deportivo keeper German Lux, but despite the visitors' vociferous protestations, the goal stood.

Bale doubled Real's advantage in the 22nd minute, putting his head where it hurts to nod home Daniel Carvajal's right wing cross.

The game was over as a contest in the 49th minute as Cristiano Ronaldo took a break from shooting at goal to cross the ball to Gareth Bale, who opened up his body and sidefooted home from just inside the box.

And Bale grabbed his hat-trick and his 51st goal in a Real Madrid shirt by heading home Toni Kroos' corner after some more excellent work from Carvajal down the right.

Bale was withdrawn on 77 minutes to give Jese Rodriguez a late run out and Real's shoot on sight approach did yield a late addition to the scoreline with Karim Benzema grabbing his second of the evening in stoppage time, hammering home from close range after Ronaldo missed another opportunity to get on the scoresheet after Jese squared a cross to the Portuguese with just the goalkeeper to beat.

The win keeps Real Madrid 2 points behind Barcelona in the La Liga standings with the Catalan giants having a game in hand due to their Club World Cup commitments late last year. Barcelona beat Granada by a 4-0 scoreline earlier today with Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick in that game.
