Fifty players were up for grabs on Tuesday afternoon as the braintrust of new IPL teams Pune and Rajkot were allowed first grab at 5 players each before the 'real' IPL auction gets underway in February next year.

Pune, by virtue of bidding higher for the rights to their team, were given the right to choose first, and unsurprisingly they opted for Skipper MS Dhoni. Rajkot followed suit by buying IPL legend Suresh Raina, who might finally get a chance to show his leadership potential in this format.

Pune's four other picks were unsurprisingly Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Steve Smith and Faf du Plessis. Rajkot ended up with the equally impressive quartet of Ravindra Jadeja, Brendon McCullum, James Faulkner and Dwayne Bravo.

The top 5 players cost their teams Rs. 39 crores out of their Rs. 66 crore purse with the lead duo each walking away with Rs. 12.5 crore, followed by the next 4 in order earning 9cr, 7.5cr, 5.5cr and 4 cr respectively.

The remaining 40 players, including the likes of Shane Watson and Stuart Binny will be up for grabs in the Feb draft.
