Somdev stuns Vesely to help India restore parity in Davis Cup tie

India's hopes of returning to the World Group in the Davis Cup for the first time since 2011 could well rest on Sunday's reverse singles encounter between Somdev Devvarman and Czech no.2 Lukas Rosol, after the former produced an excellent performance to stun world no. 40 Jiri Vesely in straight sets in New Delhi on Friday.

The Czech Republic, top seeds in the Play-offs this year, won the first of their Singles matches on Friday with relative ease as Rosol crushed 23 year old Yuki Bhambri 6-2, 6-1, 7-5 in under 2 hours in reasonably pleasant weather conditions in the Indian capital.

With the sun playing truant for most of the day, it was the humidity rather than the heat that the Czech players needed to combat as they took on India for the first time since 1997.

Somdev Devvarman kept India very much in the contest, by restoring parity by shrugging off the threat posed by Vesely, also in straight sets.

The first set was perhaps the most crucial in the contest with Somdev nicking it in a tiebreak 7-3. The match finished with the scoreline 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the Indians favour, but it was a reasonably well contested affair and took the better part of 3 hours as the duo slugged it out for each point from the back of the court.

India come into Saturday's doubles tie as massive favourites to take a 2-1 lead with the experienced duo of Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna taking on Radek Stepanek and Adam Pavlasek. The hosts though will then hope that one of their younger guns can deliver on what is likely to be an entertaining final day come Sunday.

Saturday's doubles encounter kicks off at 11am local time, though morning thunderstorms could cause a delay in the start.
