Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is likely to remain at Old Trafford this summer, despite the Red Devils and Real Madrid known to have agreed on a deal for the player today.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague was reported tweeting from his official Twitter account: ‘The documents did not arrive on time!!!!!! Presentation was ready. All agreed. But as it stands de Gea stays at MUFC!!’

It was revealed some time back that the two clubs had agreed to a transfer for the player to the Santiago Bernabeu, with Real set to pay £29m for his services, including letting Keylor Navas move to Old Trafford as part of the deal. The Costa Rican ace was himself understood to have agreed to the transfer, with the deal believed to be a finished one, only for time to eventually play spoilsport to Los Blancos’ plans.

The situation, meanwhile, means De Gea may remain at Old Trafford for the whole of this season, and probably leave for free next year, unless of course the Red Devils manage to coax him into putting pen to paper on a contract extension at the club. The Spaniard may now be reinstated as the first choice keeper for the club, with Sergio Romero likely to act as his understudy.

Meanwhile, conspiracy theorists are saying that United deliberately delayed the transfer, with their paperwork reportedly arriving a minute after the deadline passed. This suggestion is of course quite ludicrous and it is believed that Real Madrid are going to appeal to FIFA on Tuesday morning in an attempt to push the transfer through.

United meanwhile are believed to be quite relaxed about the situation as they anyway have till 6pm on Tuesday to wrap up Navas' move as the English transfer window closes a day later.
