Sri Lanka set about the business of chasing down India's first innings total on Day 2 of the second test of the series at the P Sara Oval, this after dismissing their visitors for 393.

India resumed their innings from their overnight score of 319-6 and wicketkeeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha proved to be the major source of resistance for the Lankan bowlers. The youngster followed up his half-century in the first test with another handy innings of 56 before he fell leg before to Rangana Herath, who was once again the pick of the bowlers taking 4-81.

Saha got some decent support from leg spinner Amit Mishra, who chipped in with a patient 24.

Sri Lanka's innings started poorly with Karunaratne falling for 1 in the second over, trapped leg before by the returning Umesh Yadav. The young pacer bowled in good areas and could easily have got a few more wickets, beating batsmen outside the off-stump with monotonous regularity.

Kumar Sangakkara came out to bat for the penultimate time in his test career and was given a guard of honour by the Indian players. The veteran left-hander survived a tough examination from Yadav, making his way to 32 before being well caught by Rahane at slip off Ravichandran Ashwin.

Amit Mishra also bowled exceptionally well and was eventually rewarded with the wicket of Kaushal Silva, who top scored with 51. The opening batsman was fortunate to be handed a reprieve when he was caught behind off a no-ball by Stuart Binny.

Angelo Mathews (19*) and Lahiru Thirimanne (28*) negotiated the remaining overs as Sri Lanka ended day 2 at 140-3, trailing India by 253 runs. The home side will look to pick up the scoring rate tomorrow, while India will hope that the pitch offers them a bit more assistance as they look to make their way through the Lankan batting line-up.
