England have taken a 2-1 lead in the race for the Ashes having crushed Australia by 8 wickets in the third Test of the series at Edgbaston in well under 3 days.

Australia started Day 3 already in deep trouble just some 20 odd runs in the lead with 7 wickets back in the hutch. In fairness to the visitors, they looked to make a game of it with Peter Nevill (59) and Mitchell Starc (58) scoring half-centuries as England were made to wait in the field for much longer than they would have liked.

England finally did get the 3 wickets they needed to knock over the Aussies, whose second innings folded for 265, leaving England with a potentially tricky target of 121 to win.

England's run chase didn't start well with skipper Alastair Cook falling for 7, but Australian skipper Michael Clarke dropped a regulation chance in the slips to give Ian Bell a reprieve, and the veteran made the most of the opportunity, following up his 53 in the first innings with an unbeaten 65 today to take England to victory.

Adam Lyth failed to make a telling contribution, falling for 12, but Joe Root continued his fine form this summer to give Bell the required company to see England safely home.

England have bounced back from the hammering they received at Lord's in some style, and with the exception of the injury to James Anderson it has been a near perfect match for the home team as they look to regain the Ashes.
